Tell Your Story

Anyone can upload a video of their own on the subject of how they’ve been affected by suicide. I am using OurMedia.org, an open-access site which hosts media files, to do this. Ultimately, I’m hoping to make a feature documentary out of the material people upload. We call this “participatory documentary creation” (PDC) where one gathers a web database of video material first and then uses that to make the documentary.

About OurMedia
This site provides "free storage and free bandwidth for your videos, audio files, photos, text or software. Forever. No catches." It combines content hosting with community features including messaging and web logs. The site creators are brilliant, but OurMedia is very new, so you may encounter a few bugs. Always keep a copy of your video on your home computer, and back up your contacts and text from the site.

How to Participate

1. Register for OurMedia.org and archive.org if you have not already. OurMedia uses The Archive for storage, so you must be a member of both. The two sites are free, and they're nice people doing nice things.

2. Log in to OurMedia and click here to go to my member page. Add me to your buddies list, so we can stay in touch.

3. Download the OurMedia Publisher so you can upload your video. You can also use the Publish My Media page, but for anything over 10 MB use the Publisher download.

4. When you've published your video and it appears on your OurMedia page, send me a message and I'll add it to the showcase on my blog at OurMedia, and at hownottokillyourself.com.

5. Email me if you'd like to be informed of "How Not To Kill Yourself" events and developments.
